Manchester City and Barcelona have experienced an almost identical season this year.
The two teams ended the season with a cup win and their domestic league titles, but with a clear ‘thorn’ in their side; the Champions League.
Champions with authority
Guardiola won the Premier League with five matchdays left until the end of the season, and were the team that scored the most goals and let in the least.
For their part, Barcelona won the LaLiga with four games still to play, without losing and having scored the most goals.
City thrashed Arsenal at Wembley (3-0) to win the League Cup, whilst Barcelona also thrashed Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final (5-0).
The big failure: Champions League
The Catalans drew Roma and everyone celebrated, as they did again after they won the first leg 4-1.
Game over.
However, the return at the Stadio Olimpico saw Roma mount an incredible 3-0 comeback that left their supporters and the club in shock.
Barcelona were eliminated against all odds.
The tie between Liverpool and Manchester City was supposed to be much more even.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had already shown that they could beat Guardiola’s team, and in fact they were the first team to beat them in the Premier League in 2017/18 (4-3).
In the end, Liverpool won both games (3-0 and 1-2) and knocked City out.
It’s not just that both fell in the quarterfinals, but the way they did it.
Both were heavy favourites and both lost in a resounding manner.
