  2. Break point Anisimova

    *Halep 2-6 3-4 Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova is not going into her shell.

The American is keeping faith with the ultra-aggressive approach that got her into this position.

Halep is still getting all the backing on Chatrier. Appreciative applause greets Anisimova winners, but there is certainly more passion in the reactions to Halep success.

And another indicator of the scrap which Halep finds herself in is the increased volume of the grunts that accompany each of her returns.

  4. Halep breaks

    *Halep 2-6 3-4 Anisimova

The first break point is back in the bag as Amanda Anisimova crunches across court with extreme prejudice.

She tries the same trick, with a bit of variation, on the next point. But her down-the-line punch flies long.

We are back on serve… big moments these.

  5. Two break points for Halep

    Halep 2-6 2-4 *Anisimova

Now then, Simona Halep’s finds a bit of whip and sting to her forehand to bring uptwo break-back pointsand 15-40.

  6. Halep holds

    Halep 2-6 2-4 *Anisimova

Simona Halep keeps her cards on the table with a hold to 30. Any chance of throwing a spanner in the spokes of Amanda Anisimova in the next game?

  7. Anisimova holds

    *Halep 2-6 1-4 Anisimova

    And she holds!

Amanda Anisimova wins the game’s final point three times over, finally running the legs off battery bunny Simona Halep.

Is that the match? It was a really gutsy hold from the teenager. What more can Halep summon up to throw at her?

    ‘Simona! Simona! Simona!’

The European crowd are nailing their colours to the Romanian’s mast after she ends the rot of losing seven successive games.

Can the gladiatorial chanting help Halep find her weaponry?

    Halep 2-6 1-3 *Anisimova

Talent and fearlessness. The ultimate combination.

Amanda Anisimova is toying with Simona Halep here, effortlessly hitting winners from both flanks as the Romanian scuttles across the baseline like she’s doing shuttle runs. With no reward at the end of them.

A few shouts of ‘Come on Simona!’ are trying to gee up the defending champ.

But they are as lifeless as Halep. Chatrier, only half full, is silently subdued.

  12. Halep holds

    Halep 2-6 1-3 *Anisimova

Simona Halep is having to pull out the big stops to keep her head above water.

A supreme stretching pass brings up 30-0, before a popping ace, which survives a review from the umpire, gives her three games points.

Amanda Anisimova drills another monster forehand but the deficit is too much to make up.

  13. Anisimova holds

    *Halep 2-6 0-3 Anisimova

She has got street smarts as well.

Amanda Anisimova shows the grey matter to go with the ballistic hitting. Faced with a spot of 15-30 awkwardness, she takes an extra couple of seconds at the back of the court to check Simona Halep’s momentum, refocuses and takes the game.

  14. Anisimova breaks

    Halep 2-6 0-2 *Anisimova

    Truly astonishing tennis.

Amanda Anisimova is walloping winners for fun, Simona Halep is sucking oxygen and scurrying for all she is worth, but can’t keep pace.

A set and a break to the good.

    *Halep 2-6 0-1 Anisimova

    No let-up, no mercy.

Amanda Anisimova wins her fifth game in a row with a hold to love.

It is Simona Halep who looks like an over-matched, over-awed teenager.

A stunned murmur echoes around Chatrier. Some people jump to their feet to applaud what they’ve just seen from this American teenager.

Anisimova is first player – man or woman – born in the 2000s to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final.

Now she’s one set away from making that a semi-final.
