Ask anyone; which is the most competitive league in the world? I can literally bet most of the people would answer, the Premier League. Considered as one of the most robust leagues in the footballing industry, what the spectators love about it is its stupefying nature. They say football is one of the most aggressive sports and the Premier League underlines itself as a perfect specimen of it. Tackles are seen flying at times and during the derbies, you cannot really expect a methodical night. Having said that, here we take a look at those players who have received the most number of cautions this season.
Emre Can – 8
Liverpool’s Emre Can has had his ups and downs this season and while the Anfield hierarchy are bulging into resolving his contract situation, the German has topped the list of receiving most number of yellows thus far. In 26 Premier League thus far, the midfielder has received 8 cautions this season
Nicolás Otamendi – 8
Scoring four goals this season, Centre-back Nicolas Otamendi has played all but one game for Manchester City this season. Averaging six defensive actions per game, the Argentine has been one peripheral figure for the Citizens in the Premier League pursuit. Hence, a joint top 8 yellow cards are understood
Oriol Romeu – 8
Southampton’s Oriol Romeu is sharing his name with some of the best in this list. Just as the aforementioned two, the former Chelsea midfielder has been at the receiving end of 8 yellow cards this season. His efforts, however, have failed to take Southampton even into the top half of the table, as the Saints are currently fighting to get off the relegation zone
Pablo Zabaleta – 8
Zabaleta moved to West Ham from Manchester City over the previous summer and a lot was expected off him given his vast experience in the Premier League. His failure, however, is partly down to the botching of West Ham as a whole. Talking about the cautions, he too has received 8 yellows thus far. At least West Ham are on top somewhere.
Joe Allen – 7
Playing all but two games for Stoke City, former Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has scored two goals thus far and has assisted further 6. In terms of yellows, he has been at the receiving end of seven cautions this season.
The 7 Group
Baring Joe Allen, as many as ten other players have received seven yellow cards this season, namely, Burnley’s Ashley Barnes, Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucouré, West Brom’s Jonny Evans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis and Dan Gosling. The list is followed by the likes of Isaac Hayden, Alvaro Morata, Glenn Murray, Antonio Valencia and the hot head, Granit Xhaka.
The 6 Group
As many as 15 players have received 6 yellow cards this season. The list includes the likes of Tottenham’s Dele Alli, Burnley’s Jack Cork and Steven Defour, Everton’s Tom Davies, Brighton’s Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk. These names are followed by Manchester United’s Ashley Young and Nemanja Matic, Huddersfield’s Jonathan Hogg and Tommy Smith, Crystal Palace’s Luka Milivojevic and Patrick van Aanholt. The likes of Fernandinho, Adam Smith and Wilfred Ndidi also follow.
